ROTATING & TORQUE MEASUREMENTS
MINATURE DATA RECORDERS ELIMINATE NEED FOR SLIP RINGS
The Challenge:
- Collecting data on rotating test articles like drive shafts or rotors
- The University of Florida Formula SAE needed to collect transient load data to calculate fatigue-life of drivetrain and suspension components, plus tuning of spring and dampers to improve acceleration performance
- Engine dynomometer data could not replicate impact loading and transient conditions
- Cost and maintenance of expensive slip rings
- Power and triggering concerns
The Solution:
- An ultra-small DTS data acquisition system was attached directly to the drive shaft
- The University of Florida selected SLICE NANO due to its small size and 500 g shock rating
- To protect it from track debris, the DAS was mounted to the drive shaft in an enclosure
- Positioning DAS near the sensors eliminates long cable runs, improves data quality & reduces noise
- Low power, three 9V batteries were wired in parallel and attached to the rotating shaft
- Store in place reliability, data writes directly to flash memory
- Trusted complete solution provider and industry expert in automotive safety testing
- See University of Florida Formula SAE White Paper for more details and test data
