COMBAT HELMET SMART-SENSOR
TRACKING TRAUMATIC BRAIN INJURIES IN U.S. ARMY & MARINE SOLDIERS
The Challenge:
- Ultra-small, low power, helmet-mounted shock recorder
- Measure head impact and pressure levels in combat events, identify possible head injuries and aid in determining if a Soldier should see immediate medical attention
- Analyze and correlate experienced head forces and Mild Traumatic Brain Injury (MTBI)
- Low power unit, able to record up to months in remote locations
- Collect data from multiple types of sensors
- Easy installation and maintenance
- Secure data transmission
- Simple software for set-up, download and data viewing
The Solution:
- DTS awarded Wright Patterson AFRL contract to develop the Embedded Event Recorder
- DTS awarded BAE contract to develop the next generation Embedded Event Recorder, officially called HEADS (Headborne Energy Analysis and Diagnostic Systems)
- The HEADS unit weighs only 2 ounces and embeds in the crown of a helmet
- 7 independent transducers (triaxial accelerometer, triaxial angular rate sensor, pressure sensor)
- Unit operates on an internal rechargeable battery and can record for up to 12 months
- Store in place reliability, data securely writes directly to flash memory
- Trigger thresholds starts record mode, alerts if a soldier should seek immediate medical attention with a possible Mild Traumatic Brain Injury (MTBI)
- 48,000 units fielded to U.S. Army and U.S. Marine Corps in Iraq and Afghanistan
- DTS is a trusted complete solution provider and experts in injury biomechanics
- U.S. Army named the DTS Helmet Sensor as one of the “Greatest Inventions of 2011”
